From Dan O’Donnell, Vista City Council member, District 4
Vista residents,
I want to bring your attention to an important issue that, while happening in Carlsbad, could have serious implications for our community and our fire department here in Vista.
On Tuesday, September 30, the Carlsbad City Council will vote on whether to move forward with a feasibility study for a proposed solar farm and battery storage facility on land owned by the Carlsbad Metropolitan Water District. While the project site is in Carlsbad, the surrounding area is directly adjacent to Vista and Oceanside neighborhoods.
This feasibility study includes a Phase 2 option (which begins actual design work) making this much more than just an early stage idea. It’s critical we pay attention now.
Carlsbad Fire Chief Calderwood has stated that fire danger will be part of the study, and that the project wouldn’t proceed without considering those risks. However, given our region’s wildfire history, and how close this land is to Vista neighborhoods, we must stay involved to ensure our public safety concerns are fully addressed.
Meeting Date: Tuesday, September 30 at 5pm
