Dear C4FA Supporters,

Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its final determination that emissions of lead from aircraft that operate on leaded fuel cause or contribute to air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health and welfare under the Clean Air Act.

‘The science is clear: exposure to lead can cause irreversible and life-long health effects in children,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “Aircraft that use leaded fuel are the dominant source of lead emissions in our air. With today’s action, the Biden-Harris Administration can move forward in the process to propose new standards to protect all communities from the serious threat of lead pollution from aircraft.’ ” EPA Press Release, October 18, 2023

Palomar Airport ONLY sells LEADED aviation gasoline. In general, piston-engined aircraft such as small aircraft, light helicopters and vintage piston-engined air-craft use leaded aviation gasoline, called leaded avgas. Leaded automobile fuel was phased out by the mid 1980s, and has been banned since 1996, but until now, the aviation industry has been exempted. The dangers of lead in humans have been known for decades. Lead causes permanent brain and neurological damage in children.

Palomar Airport should offer only UNLEADED avgas, sooner rather than later. Palomar Air port must be a neighbor friendly airport, and leaded fuel on our homes, our parks, and our schools is not a good neighbor policy.
