Hoo Boy. This past week was a doozy. The County’s Campaign of Disinformation begins…..
During last Thursday’s bimonthly Palomar Airport Advisory Committee (PAAC) meeting, the County dropped two big ones on us.
First, Palomar Airport is bleeding money by any normal standards. Its expenses exceeded its revenues last year by $3.8 million. But don’t worry, there’s some magic County fund, which when asked by the public for details, the County wouldn’t disclose or explain. The County claims it can “pull from” this “fund” to make up the losses so Palomar Airport “doesn’t really lose money”. Apparently this unique accounting has been going on for years…..
Secondly, surprise, surprise…the County is now claiming that since they started shoehorning a commercial jet that is TOO LARGE for Palomar Airport, that Palomar airport would be “safer” if it was expanded. As both the City of Carlsbad and C4FA claimed in our public comments, the County is planning to create a “safety issue” of their own making, using that safety issue as an excuse to bypass the Court ordered process, to try and expand Palomar Airport. We’ve heard this one before. This time, however, AA is in the picture.
This is not a “baby” expansion. It’s the full blown plan that the Court ordered rescinded in 2021. It’s a huge, monstrous remaking of Palomar Airport to fly huge jets in and out of Palomar at all hours of the day and night. Think “John Wayne South” because that’s what it would be. (Remember, we don’t have mandatory quiet hours or mandatory flight paths like John Wayne, and the County’s plans don’t include obtaining them.) If the County gets their way, the “Point Loma Pause” will be coming to a few North County Cities near you….24/7.

By the way, our first Court hearing to try and obtain an injunction on the AA flights until the legal proceedings are complete will be heard on Friday, April 4th at 3pm, at San Diego Superior Court, Dept. 71.
